Here’s something to drool over and, if you’re looking at going the whole hog with your outdoor room, to glean some inspiration from.

Michelle Kodis is an American journalist who specialises in writing about design and architecture. She also has fond memories of Outward Bound hikes in Wales, trekking in Nepal and rafting in Utah – the key to her love of outdoor dining.

Her book takes in 26 “kitchens” (for kitchens, read barbecue areas) throughout the US, purportedly for a range of budgets. Included with each example is a basic design that show how the area relates to the house and other features, such as a pool.
