Water Gardens — Goldfish varieties

WHY are fancy varieties of goldfish so difficult to buy in New Zealand?

BECAUSE it is illegal to import goldfish into this country at present and has been for some time. Hence the fish around have all been bred from existing stock and not refreshed with new bloodlines.

Luckily there are a few dedicated hobbyists who have taken the time and trouble to breed good strains of fancy goldfish such as Orandas and Lionheads. These are available in small numbers to the trade from time to time.
